A tense, terrifying, melancholic, breathtaking fantasy thriller with hints of a ghost story
Line of Events
It follows a young girl named Emma on her journey to learn how to communicate with the spirit of a young girl named Uxoa, who has been trapped in a hermit’s den for centuries, as she tries to convince Carol, a skeptical medium, to help her. A supernatural thriller full of scary deeds, excitement, chills and plenty of scares; however, the reasons for some of the confusing and unexplained, some of the creepy events are never well explained. The film depicts a fictionalized story of a social reality that plagues a small town. It begins with an obvious historical prologue involving a plague, a chapel where the sick were kept, and a flock of beaked bird people, but it turns out to be an entertainment event taking place at the small town’s annual festival when the chapel, thought to be haunted by little Usoa, is opened to a spell of letters. It follows a young girl named Emma (Maia Zaitegi) on her journey to learn how to communicate with the spirit of a girl named Uxoa, who has been trapped in a hermit’s den for centuries, as she tries to convince Carol (Belén Rueda), a skeptical and fake medium, to help her.
It’s a haunting film, with an unsettling horror and a sinister atmosphere as sinister creatures appear
The latter has direct scars from a childhood when her, perhaps, real-life medium mother seemed more interested in the local little girl ghost than her own daughter. It’s an acceptable and relatable film, full of characters who are not always sympathetic, deeply human and relatable. . A tense, mysterious film full of thrills, suspense, chills, red herrings, and creepy twists and turns. Step by step, the secrets begin to unravel until its surprising finale, which becomes a sentimental ghost story with a serious, frightening subtext in the mode of «Orphanage» or «Pan’s Labyrinth», but with its own distinctive feminine accent.
It is an attractive drama whose interest diminishes as the effective, tiring excess of supposedly frightening elements increases
Although «Cerdita» focuses mainly on pure horror in «La Ermita», there are several things that confirm Pereda as a key figure in the current horror and fantasy genre. One of them is his direct entry into genre cinema: he does not hesitate to bet on fantasy, adding a little personal drama. He empties himself as the footage continues, and does not allow us to talk about such a gem as «Cerdita»; . Despite this, Pereda manages to create a film that is more than worthy, but inferior to the previous one. Pereda has a great eye for the Gothic, enjoying the trappings of Spanish horror, although she doesn’t really make a horror film.
It turns out to be an adequate and decent film, but not memorable
Star Belén Rueda gives a great performance in her usual style, she is an expert in mystery and horror films such as: Juliet’s Eyes , Orphanage , No dormirás , Durante la tormenta , The Pact, Orbita 9, and the actress. Body. In fact, Belén Rueda is the closest thing Spain has to a horror heroine or «Scream Queen», she is perfectly combined with the child prodigy Maia Zaitegi, who resembles the young Ana Torrent in the films «Cria Cuervos» or «El espiritu de la colmena». The film is professionally directed by Carlota Pereda, who is undoubtedly a talented writer and filmmaker. As a female drama with genre-like undertones, this is Pereda’s second solid showcase of talent.

Her first film was the much better Cerdita, which was based on Carlota Pereda’s own Goya winner of the same name for Best Short Film, winner of the 2018 Goya for Best Short Film, also starring Laura Galán. Rating: 5.5/10.
