The first few minutes of Blitz #39; are overwhelming

Saoirse Ronan and Harris Dickinson previously starred together in See How They Run (2022). From the very beginning, Steve McQueen throws us into the deep end. The first scene shows burning houses, firefighters doing everything they can, one of them is injured, and others are fighting against a wall of fire and noise.
The camera is in the middle of the chaos, capturing it in raw, sometimes blurry images, and you can almost feel the heat of the flames II
McQueen shows the horrors of war from the point of view of Rita, a single mother living with her son George and father in a working-class neighborhood. For her own safety, she sends her son to the countryside, but he doesn’t want to go and refuses to say goodbye at the train station. George jumps off the slow-moving train and makes his way back to London, but on the way home all sorts of obstacles prevent a happy reunion with his mother.
In both parallel stories, the lightning is shown in all its horrors
McQueen regularly switches between George’s adventures and Rita’s desperate search for the effort. Bombed streets, constant fear, underground shelters, women working in munitions factories, live BBC broadcasts to lift the spirits. McQueen adds an extra layer by showing the racism in British society at the time, which was convinced of its own superiority.
From a cinematographic perspective, there is much to admire
Beautiful tracking shots, original camera angles and impressive aerial shots of burning London. One very nice scene begins with an abstract, moving dots slowly changing into moonlit waves, which form the backdrop for German bombers flying over the North Sea. It is also a film that has a lot to offer: a gripping story, spectacular war, lots of emotion, nostalgic songs and a mother-child motif that everyone can identify with.
And one surprising addition to the cast: Paul Weller plays Rita’s father
There are moments where subtlety is lacking, and McQueen is clearly aiming for the tear ducts from time to time. But for the sheer amount of devastation London suffered during the Blitz, this is definitely worth watching.
