American (English) remake of the French series HPI (2021)
Line of Events
It follows Morgan, a single mother of three, and how, thanks to her exceptional mind, she is able to help solve a crime while reorganizing evidence during her shift as a police department cleaner. Despite her very high IQ, excellent memory and extensive knowledge of the arcane, Morgan makes a number of basic legal mistakes that anyone who has ever watched a law show on TV would know not to make.
It also could not be used to obtain other evidence – a violation of the legal doctrine of «fruit of the poisonous tree»
In episode one, for example, she obtains a document from a locked safe in a suspect-victim’s law office that would never be admissible in court – evidence obtained illegally. In episode 2, she has to be reminded to wear gloves before handling evidence at a crime scene, and in #3, she removes all documented evidence from the police station, completely breaking the chain of custody and making whatever she removed also no longer admissible in a court of law.
Remake of HPI (2021)
Digging into her TV resume away from Always Sunny, and outgrowing her role in The Mick, Olson slips onto the screen in a not-so-scene-for-scene remake of this French procedural, but she’s definitely in tune with it. Throughout the episode, you can tell Olson was drawn to this project by the way it portrays a feisty, empowered, capable woman.
The first episode was well-done, though the editing could use some work
Comedy is woven into her delivery, much like the irony of her French counterpart. What this series does best, though, is keep you captivated by a seasoned cast led by Judy Reyes, whose stern eyes and soft voice invite the audience to develop a sense of empathy toward the players her character cares about gathering around her to seek justice.
The series would have been elevated by more scenes between Reyes and Olson
